An old African proverb states that ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ - which basically means that raising a child is a community effort. In a broader sense it also means that every individual and group outside the family structure, such as an Early Learning Centre or Family Day Care, has an impact on a child’s wellbeing.
So, how do we ensure wellbeing for our children? By building a strong foundation. In doing so this enhances a child’s environment, encouraging healthy development and growth - physically, mentally and emotionally.
But what if you’re on shaky ground - a vulnerable family or child? How do we assist everyone to increase their resilience and build a happy home that encourages growth and learning? While we know that children have the capacity to learn from infancy researchers have recently discovered that adults can also learn life skills at any time of life and that active skill building, and practice can have a real impact on children’s lives. Better, more effective parents, providers and communities will ensure a healthier future for everyone.
