Making significant strides in her career, Kylie left behind working in customer service to find a more fulfilling profession at not-for-profit Windermere Child & Family Services. Earlier this year, she turned her love of engaging with children into rewarding work, starting out as an Assistant Educator at the Windermere Lang Lang OSHC service.
“I was new to working with children, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and I am loving it so far,” says Kylie.
The flexibility of working in before and after school care also allowed Kylie to study and work toward gaining relevant qualifications.
“I’m studying for my Diploma of School Age Education and Care and being able to study while working means I can implement my learnings in the workplace. The flexibility to learn allows me to develop my career early on,” says Kylie.
This has been true for Kylie, who quickly progressed to the Lead Educator position thanks to her course teachings and support from her team. She now runs the Lang Lang OSHC with another Assistant Educator.
In her day-to-day work at OSHC, Kylie plans activities, breakfast and afternoon snacks, and ensures all safety and first aid criteria are met and are up to date.
“I really like connecting with the kids and planning activities for them that are not related to schoolwork. So, you are able to really embrace their creativity and get to know different personalities,” says Kylie.
As there are children from different classes and age groups together in OSHC, Kylie observes new friendships and interactions taking place.
“At times older children want to get involved and help look after the younger ones. You also find that children in OSHC form really good friendships,” she says.
As newcome to Early Education and Care, Kylie also values the support and preparations she’s experienced at Windermere.
“The Lead Educator who was there before me, took me under her wing and trained me and helped me with anything that I needed for a smooth transition. I am also learning a lot through the Windermere work modules and I’ve never felt that I couldn’t do my job,” she says.
It's not only the support and training that help Kylie build her confidence and give her assurance that she’s on the right track.
Kylie offers her encouragement to anyone looking to start out in Early Education and Care and recommends OSHC as a great starting point.
“OSHC works well if you are new to the industry as it allows you to study as well. If you need to make a start, just go for it,” she adds.
Outside of building her career and studying, Kylie makes the most out of the flexibility that comes with working OSHC hours. After an early start to her workday, she’s able to frequent the gym and yoga classes more often and enjoys catching up with friends over brunch.
